Help with jailbreak

Hey, I was wondering if you can help me jailbreak/unlock my iphone 3g 8gb...

The problems I am having are..
-Phone needs to be "restored" I cannot acess or do anything besides emergency dialer and Recovery mode
-I have no idea what firmware i have, its either 2.0 or 2.2.1 or something allow the 2.??? lol.
-I tried to restore the phone to 2.0 (because i dont know what version i have) . I extracted and then this popped up...

The iPhone "iPhone" Could not be restored, an unknown error occured (23)

I replied to you other post before I saw this one.

This may be a better process.

Did you try and hold both buttons down for 30 seconds or so? It will ask you to reconnect to iTunes. I had to set up a new phone when I had this problem in the past. The sync process will take some time because your phone is wiped out! You will be able to keep your iTunes apps, contacts, etc. but you will loose your current Jailbroken ones if you have any.
