Why doesn't iTunes Match seem to work with music not purchased on iTunes?

ITunes Match does not seem to work with music not purchased on iTunes.

I have a large CD collection that I accumulated over time. I recently purchased iTunes match. Since then, I usually canNOT access any music that was not purchased on iTunes, which makes up only a fraction of my music. The other music simply does not appear. I have a MacBook Pro, iPhone 6+, and iPad 3. Any suggestions.

Are you signed into iTunes and iTunes Match? All the ,used is on the Mac and uploaded to the cloud?
