How to download .mp3 files to iTunes

MacBook OS X 10.6.8 - a fine-working antique which does everything I need

- Have a dozen .mp3 files on my desktop
- Attempting to add to MUSIC in iTunes
- FILE: Add To Library
- Highlight desktop files
- Click OPEN
- According to everything I've found on-line, these files are then supposed to appear in the MUSIC library in iTunes
- Not so

- So I attempt to highlight the desktop files and drag them into MUSIC
- Nothing

Any information to help resolve this? Appreciated.

That always worked for me. But I suspect that there is something wrong with the mp3 files if drag-and-drop didn't work - maybe they are using an encoding that iTunes cannot play?
