Photo Stream: Internal storage use?

Does Photo Stream actually use any internal storage space on the device? Or is it entirely cloud-based storage and stream the images to the receiving device (and release that space when the image is no longer being viewed)?

One of my photography workflow items is importing photos from my camera to my iPad, and I want to ensure that this does not cause me to use up the little storage space I have available on my iPhone.

Yes. I'm fairly sure it does use storage. One quick test would be to check your available storage in your iPhone, turn off photo stream, and check available storage again to see if it changed.
Hmm, testing... I took about a hundred quick photos with my Nikon (in RAW format), and imported them to my iPad with Photo Stream on. Down to 2.4GB free. Deleted the photos from the albums, and regained up to 3.1GB free. Deleted the photos from Photo Stream, and regained up to 3.2GB free. Maybe it does what I want, as as long as I don't view them on the iPhone, I'll be fine.
