My iPad went black and shut down abruptly.. Should I do a hard reset? If so, how?

It does not respond when turning the switch off or on or plugging in to charge.

Plug it in charge, press the home and power button for at least 10 seconds till you see the  logo and release them. If your iPad still doesn't want to power up, connect it to your computer and try again with iTunes open.

The only time I have seen this is when it has a zero charge. Plug it in for about 5 minutes and see if it comes on.
