Is Microsoft Word Free on iPad?

I remember reading that Microsoft Word well all of their mobile apps would be free on devices that are under 10 inches. I just tried with my iPad Air 2 its 9.7 inches but when I try to use it, it asks for a office 365 subscription. Anybody here using MS Office on their iPad?

I installed MS Word on an iPad Air a few months ago and it was free then. The part of the app that was not free was saving documents to the cloud.

But you can save them locally on the iPad right?

Oh okay I see only works with outlook accounts once I signed it with that it started working =)
