I am trying to restore my IPad 2 and it gets so far and stops what may be the issue?

After trying to update the IPad 2 it stopped and returned that the IPad cannot be updated and needs to be restored to factory settings When I started that, it went about half way and stopped.
I tried it 3 or 4 more times
I got 2 different errors:
1 lost contact with the device
2 cannot contact with the update server.
