How to unlock my Ipad mini without Itunes

My wife bought me a new Ipad mini and made her own passcode. Unfortunatly she did not create an Itunes account to link to the Ipad, and she says she does not know the passcode The Ipad now says to connect to Itunes, but Itunes will not reconize it. I really want to use it, but I have no clue how to get back into it.

I'm not understanding what an iTunes account have to do with the device passcode? Anyway, to bypass the "lock screen passcode" you will have to connect the device to a computer and restore it via iTunes. There is no way around it.
