Once on a business trip to Vegas I was stuck with a client that couldn't be drag out of the casino. I ended up putting somewhere in the neighborhood of $1200 in gambling losses on the expense report. No one caught it and I didn't feel bad. I didn't want to be there this guy insisted.

Craziest thing expensed

I worked at a company that had a wellness program. Basically, they would allow each employee to expense exercise equipment, gym memberships, etc. up to a certain point. I believe it was something like $2,000 USD a year. The guy who sat next to me expensed his new bass fishing boat. His argument was that it was related to a sport. He was reimbursed by the company.

Canadian owned companies treat their employees so much better than US owned companies.

Craziest thing I've ever expensed...4 tropical fish for my boss's daughter's fish tank when 2 of her other fish died. I had to drive all the way from NYC to Philadelphia to get the fish and buy special equipment to transport them back to NYC. Total - $2,998 for the fish and $400 for the equipment! $3,398 all expensed!

My iphone4

I lost my iPhone 2G, yes I kept it THAT long!! And I needed a phone for work purposes; how else would they contact me?

Needless to say, it didn't go over well and I lost some privileges fora while, but I got a new phone and avoided any serious trouble.

$650,000 worth of Cisco carrier-grade optical gear.

My company was expanding into new buildings all over town and we needed high speed between all buildings. I did a 10Gig DWDM optical network design, presented it and was turned down. At the end of the year a VP comes to me and asks if I still have that design and parts list, which I did. Turns out they needed to get lots of cash off the books and wanted to make the spend but it the sale had to be complete within 2 weeks. Since going through channels would have taken too long I put the entire list on my American Express card and expensed it at the end of the month. I bought a 42" HDTV with the award points. :)

Footnote: Two months later some exec decided we should pull our own fiber after all making my purchase unnecessary. Before the year was out we traded it all in, still in unopened boxes, for $120,000 Cisco credit.
