So, am I correct to assume that the music I burned from CD's (I own them) and/or I bought from iTunes I can't play my own music on my play1 without subscribing to Apple Music? I don't want to download everything I own to my iPad/iPhone. Unless I am missing something it seems I should be able to play (stream) whatever I bought on a Sonos play 1. Maybe there is another option besides Sonos?

If you can stream it on your phone, you should be able to play it on the Play 1.
If you can't stream it on your phone than you gotta first figure that out.
If you ripped CDs to your iTunes, I believe it can be streamed through iTunes family share / ITunes Match...
