Entering a new blank line in Messages on OS X El Capitan

On my IOS devices, using Messages, when I tap the Return button I get a new line, a blank line, on which I can begin typing. Under OS X Message, entering Return on the keyboard sends the message. How can I get a new line on OS X Messages without sending the message?

I guess I just didn't try enough key combinations! As a recent convert from Windows, I'm still finding new ways to do the old tasks. Thanks very much for your help!
