How to make icon back transparent

I searched but did not find exactly what I was looking for- and what I found did not work.
I changed the background so you can see what I am referring to. Is this something I would need magicwand for?

ever since iOS 4.0, i believe, Apple changed something in their file system that made getting rid of the shadowing very difficult. it's been a while since i dealt with this situation and if you're on iOS 5 i have no idea what has changed with that either
