HTC unlocked bootloaders

just read that htc has agreed to unlock their bootloader

wat does that mean?
can htc phones now run any os?
for eg.. can a htc run ios? or win7?

I don't know what it means for other platforms but it wont run iOS natively. Apple would go after them if that was the case. Someone might hack it to do that but just natively it wont happen.
