Lose my info and tethered jailbreak

I know these are novice questions - I'm sorry!

1) When I jailbreak will I lose the saved info on my phone, like e-mail setup, application stored info, pictures...

2) My 3GS Serial starts with 87940 - I know if the 4th number is 4 or less I don't need to tether when restarting, but what if it is a 4 - am I out of luck?

1. No. You will not lose anything.
2. Yes your jailbreak is most likely tethered.

My fourth serial digit is a 4 and I do not need a tethered jailbreak.
