How do I access missing notes after IOS upgrade on iPhone 4s?

My 4s upgraded to new IOS software. All of my notes are now gone. I find sites that will scan my phone with trial software and they find my notes on my phone but I have to pay to get them. Why isn't there a way for me to recover them myself? I do not have a Yahoo account nor do I back up to iCloud. I want to recover them from my phone directly.

Welcome to iMore! Did you have Gmail addresses in your Notes app? iCloud email? That's where they may be. Turn on Notes in iCloud. If you still don't see them, check your notes folder in your Gmail or whatever email you use. If you don't see a notes folder on your email, go to Settings >Mail,Contacts and Calendars >Your email address >Toggle on or off Notes. Whichever it is. Your notes may be in the email notes folder.
