Why can't I get sound via FaceTime on my iPad 2? I have tried all suggestions.

I can't hear person I'm facetiming but he can hear me. I tried every suggestion on forums etc. but nothing was amiss in my settings, updates all made. Also can't hear ringing when I call.

I think that it's a microphone issue. You can follow this guide to troubleshoot external mic issues http://support.apple.com/kb/ts5183. It is for the iPhone but the same basic principles apply.
