When purchasing an iPhone, would you prefer to purchase a new or used iPhone?

I've read conflicting reports about whether or not purchasing a used iPhone is bad for Apple. I've also recently read that more and more people are purchasing used iPhones. So I am curious about people here on the iMore forums, and what your preferences are.

I would purchase a new one only. Apple sells older models from their website too at a decent price. I wouldn’t need the latest. I would even consider an Apple refurbished right from their website. Not a 3rd party reseller, simply because Apple refurbished from the Apple Store is practically like buying brand new.

I have an Apple Store Refurbished 12 PM I bought in Feb. I got more for my money buying this phone and I really do love it. I buy my Pixels new on Google but that is my main phone.

The 12 pro max is a good deal. I usually buy my iPhones new and outright. I never buy a new car…that’s throwing away money…since that came up in this thread too, I figured I’d comment.

Some would say buying a new iPhone is also throwing money away. Same as buying a new car. At Verizon, you can get a certified pre-owned 256 gb iPhone 12 Pro Max for $889.99, while the 256 gb 14 Pro Max is $1,199.99. $310 difference. Other places sell the refurbished 12 Pro Max for as low as $530.

I got my iPhone 12 used off of Swappa but can say it was like brand new. 100% battery health, still under warranty for a few months, so someone bought it and sold it after only owning it a few months I think. Since I don't owe anything on it, I will probably be getting an iPhone 15 Pro when they're released mainly for the USB-C. I only bought this one used was because I wanted to try out iOS again coming from Android and can say I think I'll stick around a while . And, I love how long iPhones get software updates, so I'm fine getting a new phone since I'll probably hold on to it for 4-5 years at least instead of every 2 years like I did with my Android phone.
