Upgrading to v.2.2 with iTunes 8.0.2?

I have an unlocked 2G iPhone running v.2.0. From what I've been able to gather, it will be safe for me to upgrade to v.2.2 directly through iTunes.

However, I've read conflicting reports about whether it is okay to do this with the latest version of iTunes (8.0.2), which I am running at this time.

Before I upgrade my iPhone firmware to 2.2, should I downgrade iTunes to an earlier version? If so, How early do I need to go?

I have 2 phones, went to 2.2 in 8.0.2.(on a mac) they both work fine. good luck.
