Syncing unwanted apps

My iPad apps keep syncing to my iPhone every time I connect to iTunes despite the fact that I have "automatically install new apps" turned off in iTunes and automatic downloads turned off on my phone.

Last sync my phone froze while trying to install 30+ apps and then went into DFU mode and crashed when I tried to put it into recovery mode to restore it. I had to take it to a cell repair shop to fix it.

Any ideas on how to stop this from happening next time I connect to iTunes would be appreciated.

When you connect your iPad, do you have the option of telling it to sync to iCloud? Or can you enable iCloud sync from your iPad? I believe that will stop it from syncing to iTunes as it will do one or the other.
