save all files +folders in dropbox to external hardrive without using space on mac

I hate dropbox and sick of looking for files its clunky and their search function is poor.

I am a collector of data and don't want to lose any of it. I have tried to connect the dropbox via mac using the sync and syncing to the hard drive an unknown number of files show up as CAN'T SYNC "Access denied which would be fine if I could work out what files these are but thats all the info I get.

I want to close the dropbox account, dropbox customer service is appalling even for paid for accounts of which i have 3
