Managing Pictures

I have another simple question, I hate searching since the answers are specific sometimes.

I have a Mac Book Air and Im new to Mac.

I would like to be able to manage my pictures manually drag and drop, iphoto and apeture make it confusing for me since Im new to mac.

Can I set up the device to read like a hard drive or camera media , I would like to go into Finder and see the iphone as a drive and manually manage my pics. I would like to be able to back up the pics on the phone and add pics from my Mac to the phone..

Im sure its simple but cant figure it out

Image Capture...should be in your apps folder.
