Jailbreak possible?

I'm French and I would like an Iphone...like a lot of people. I'm in Boston for 9 months and I don't want to have a plan with AT&T during 2 years!

What can I do? (I have a MAC)
I search in Internet and I found solutions to jailbreak an iphone, but I don't know if I can just buy a Iphone without AT&T...
Or do you know stores in Boston (or New York) where I can buy an unlocked Iphone?

Well do you want a 3g or first gen iPhone? If you want a 3g I believe the only one that is unlocked is in hong kong. The first gen iPhone you can just buy from an apple store.

I want a 3g iphone... I see in boston unlocked iphone but they are 720$!
