I have both because they each fill
A certain need for me and with the whole continuity thing in iOS 8.0 they work hand in hand together.

I can leave my iPhone 6+ in another room while working on my iPad and receive iMessage/SMS/Calls etc just as I would on my 6+.

I use my iPad for work and to watch movies because if you want to watch a movie it's best on a larger screen.

But to each there own do what you think is right and what you can afford.

I honestly have found myself moving into needing an iPhone and iPad. Up until about a month ago my iPad Mini would only stay at home and I'd use it rarely. Then I upgraded to the Mini 3 and got it with cellular data, suddenly I'm finding a thousand and one reasons to keep it with me. For me, there doesn't seem to be any redundancies as I like my smaller screen 5s for calls but love my iPad for any reading/video apps.

I always upgrade my phones every few months but I usually stay with the same tablet for a year or so. So the iPad will keep all my information where I'd likely only put a few things on my phone.

Everyone has their own needs.
