gmail app on iphone

I could use some help with this one. I'm trying out the gmail app on my iphone 12 pro max, and the mail comes in...but it won't show the mail or the number count until i tap the icon. I turned off the settings for the default mail app, but the problem keeps happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have this same problem. It just started recently, probably due to the iOS15.4 update or an APP update that I didn't notice.
