Can I use the same drive for Time Machine and to clone my MacBook Pro?

I've got a 500GB HDD in my MacBook Pro, and want to clone it in preparation for installing an SSD. Then, I'd like to setup a Time Machine backup plan. Can I use the same drive to do both? Not sure if I'm thinking about this the right way, but hoped to take this as the first step in implementing a comprehensive backup plan. Will I need another drive to make this plan complete?
Thanks!

Unless things have changed, an external drive is needed for a Time Machine backup. Having said that, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you have enough available storage space on that external drive, in my opinion.

Split the HDD into two partitions, use one for superduper and one for time machine. use osx extended journaled.
