Is jailbreaking worth the apparent hassle?

I just got my first iPhone yesterday and I've been reading a few of the jailbreaking threads. I understand what it is. What are the pros and cons aside from not having to buy apps from the App Store, themes and software piracy?

For me it's not about themes or piracy it's about improving the function of the phone. There are things that the stock iPhone just won't let u do that I feel are pretty important
