I never understood why anyone would do this.
What you get from Apple is ridiculous, compared to what you get on ebay or other platforms.
And, asuming that an ebay buyer will continue using the item, it's equally beneficial for the environment.

Yes it might be more hassle-free to simply return it to Apple, and maybe no shipment (providing there is an Apple store close by). But is that worth to give something away for a much lower price?

I'm asking because I'm seriously interested. Am I missing something?

For many, convenience will be more important than $$$ so Apple will makes $$$ as they resell the phone for more than they bought it back for (…and that will include 3rd party companies like TradeMore).

For many, they might not be able to purchase a new iPhone without the trade in. And selling the old iPhone before purchasing leaves them without a phone for a while.

you are right, this makes sense.
However, I think that this type of iPhone owner/buyer might be a minority.
