3.1.2 update and iphone not working

G'day
Got given a UK iphone which has been unlocked and jailbroken(?) so I can use it in NZ. I then plugged it in to iTunes and was asked if i wanted to update to 3.1.2, so, maybe mistakenly, i did. Now all my phone does can do is make emergency calls. Any advice on how i can fix this would be much appreciated, or direct me to a thread that i can follow.

3.1.2 also updates the baseband. There is currently no unlock available for the new baseband. That's why you don't have phone functionality.

So thats it then? No more iphone for me? Whats a base band?
