Evasi0n connecting to the Internet

I was jail breaking my brothers ipad last night but when I ran Evasi0n it kept freezing. We had no internet connection at his house.
When I tethered the laptop I was using to my phone and established an Internet connection, the jailbreak finished successfully.
I was blissfully unaware that an Internet connection was required and was wondering if anyone knows why the Evasi0n software needs to connect to the web at all.

Try it you're next jailbreak- shut down your internet and evasi0n will freeze.
