4.1 out - update baseband or not?

I understand what firmware updates mean, but I am confused about the significance of a baseband update. On the Tiny Umbrella blog it says by using their software you can update to 4.1 without updating the baseband, which I did today successfully. What I don't know is, why is that important?

Because unlocking a phone has to do with the baseband... If you want to unlock the phone, dont upgrade the baseband because there is no guarantee they will find an unlock for it...
