3GS Jailbreak/Unlock Help

Hi all, Sorry for the 3 millonth post like this but there are a couple of important questions (at least important in my mind...I may just be overthinking this) that I have for you guys

Running a 3gs jailbroken and unlocked on blackrain. Running 3.1.2 right now.

I am seeing that the unlockme jailbreak and ultrasnow combined will get me to 4.0 and still have my jailbreak and unlock.

My questions is more procedural. If I understand correctly I should follow the following steps

1) Upgrade iTunes to 9.2 (check)
2) Update iphone to 4.0.1 (or something like that)
3) Run the Jailbreakme program on the phone
4) Download and run Ultrasnow from Cydia.

I get confused between 2 and 3. If I update the phones software, I am going to restore to factory defaults, which would mean my screen will be at the itunes plug thingy. How would I open the web browswer to run the jailbreak program on the phone?

Probably important to mention that I will be hacktivating when I do this. I don't have a ATT sim to stick in the phone to get past the first screen.

Am I kind of stuck?

You can not hacktivate your phone with the current jailbreak.

Yes, I believe you are stuck.
