Camera Roll/Photo Stream

Okay I have a question that I don't think any one has asked specifically but I have been looking at my iCloud usage and it is already at 1.3GB and it is mainly backups from apps but I notice that a chunk is coming from my camera roll. I though pictures did not count against your storage space. Is there a setting that I am missing to make it move them? Or does the old pictures stay there until you delete them and any new ones go to photo stream and don't take any data?

Your camera roll is separate from your photostream. The camera roll is all of the pics you took on that particular device, and they get backed up to iCloud. Photostream is the last 1000 pics you took on all devices sharing an iCloud account. They don't count toward your iCloud storage. The reason is - if you turned off photostream your cam roll still gets backed up
