Why can’t I remove myself from the conversation with iMessage

I started the conversation so I am not added as one of the recipients the other 2 people are still conversing I do not want to read the message

If you started it I don't think you can remove yourself. You can put the convo on "DND" or you can ask them to start a new chat without you.

That’s correct. Just tell the other 2 people not to post to that group anymore.
