All messages from iPad have disappeared

All old messages now state "messages have not been downloaded from server"
These are important messages that I Need to get back.

Welcome to iMore! Sometimes just doing a soft reset does the trick. To perform a soft reset, hold both the power button and home button down until you see the Apple boot logo. If that doesn't work you can also try turning iMessage off and then back on (see below). Let us know if you're still having an issue.
