Does a new Apple ID immediately stop your iMessages from going to your other devices?

If my iMessages were previously going to my other devices because we shared a single Apple ID, will that go away immediately if I start using a new Apple ID? I'm hoping that when I opened a new Apple ID and applied it to my iPhone that anyone sending imessages to my phone number will now go ONLY to my phone, and not the other devices from my old Apple ID. Basically, I'm hoping my "phone number" doesn't stay with those other devices. Thoughts?

Once your phone number is associated with a new AppleID - iMessages going to your phone number will go to the device associated with the new AppleID... iMessages sent to email addresses could still go to the other devices until the email address(es) are removed from those devices.
