Is anyone else having quirky message issues?

I have iPhone 5c. I deleted several messages. When I opened a msg thread only the last message showed. If i exit the message app and go back in all my msgs are gone. I powered off and went back to msgs and all my messages were there, even the ones I deleted. Same thing with hard reset. Then I couldn't make calls. I selected one of my favorites and nothing happened.

Try signing out of iMessage, restart phone, and then sign in.

Reboot your iPhone a second time. If that doesn't solve the problem, consider restoring the device and setting it up as new.
