What does sent mean on Facebook Messenger?

I've been trying to get in touch with a friend on Facebook using the Messenger app on my iPhone. When I sent the message, it said 'sent' but hasn't changed from that. Usually it would change to delivered almost straight away when I send a message to someone. Does this just mean that they haven't been on their Facebook account yet or is it not going through for some reason?
