Why am I getting an error code when trying to backup my iPhone to an external hard drive?

Help! I followed your steps and now my phone won't back up!

Hi,

So as you can see from the subject, I have followed your instructions on how to backup my iphone onto an external hard drive. I followed all the steps but now it says 'error back up corrupt or not recognised'.

I have even deleted my old files as instructed on itunes to back them up again from scratch but it's not giving me that option.

iTunes 12 for Mac: Back up your iPod?touch, iPhone, or iPad -- if you have Windows, the instructions should be close...
