why do the emoticons I send from my iphone in txt come through as stars on a smart phone?

when I send a txt msg emoticon from my iPhone to a smart phone, they come through as **** . how can I resolve this problem?

Be sure to install emoticons on that particular smartphone. Do you use a personalized emoticon set or the build in ones?
