Why do my Mic and Camera diasble when I open Messages?

Voice SMS in phone 6

Microphone and Camera appears disabled when I open 'Messages'. Then microphone icon vanishes when I select recipient. Cant send voice SMS.

The microphone icon that gets displayed where the send button usually is located is for iMessages only. If you select a contact that does not have an iPhone, the microphone reverts back to "send".
