How do I remove the side drop down bookmarks/favourites bar when in landscape mode?

How do I remove the side drop down bookmarks/favourites bar when in landscape.

Using landscape mode in e.mail and Safari I have a side drop down mail box or side bookmarks box that takes up one third of the screen. This has only happened since upgrading to 8.1

In Safari, when in landscape mode tap the book icon at the top and the bookmarks side bar will close.

This is a nuisance. If I have selected my bookmark, why would I want the sidebar to remain?
