why won't my ipad show on my TV when connected to an AV adapter

I bought an apple lightning digital AV adaptor about 3 weeks ago. I plugged it into my iPad mini and what was on my iPad showed up on my TV screen. Everything was fine until a few days ago. Now my iPad will recognize that the AV adaptor is plugged in but it will not play on my TV. I switched HDMI cords and got the same results. What's strange is that it works when I plug it into my iPhone. Is there some setting that I need to change to get this to work again?
