can't add dates to my calandar

I am unable to create an event on my calendar on my apple 5s it goes through all the settings but it doesn't show up

Do you have that calendar set to be visible?

Open the Calendar app. Tap "Calendars" at the bottom of the screen. See what is (and isn't) checked.
