Activating and jailbreaking without a SIM card

I got a cheap iPhone 3gs via eBay. I want to jailbreak it and resell it. When I connected it to iTunes, I got a message saying there was not SIM card installed and that I had to install a SIM card in order to activate it.

-- Do I need to activate the phone in order to jailbreak/unlock it?

-- Can I activate it without a SIM card

-- If I need a SIM card, what kind do I need, where can I get one, and how much should I pay?

you can put any sim you have in there, once itunes recognizes a sim it will get off that screen, then you can take the sim out.
