I Phone 2g will not show signs of life!!

I purchased an I phone 2g 4gb off of ebay and have not plugged it into my pc yet but when it is plugged into the charger nothing apears on the screen. The cnharger changes from green to red and nothing happens. Next if I hold down the any combination of buttons i get no response from the unit. Is it dead? Does it need to be plugged into itunes to even show anything on the screen? Help my poor Noob self!!

If its severely depleted it can take 15 or 30 minutes to even get enough power to boot.

Did the seller say it was working?

Yes he stated it worked but it has been charging for over 2 hrs also itunes recognizes it but it still has no image on the screen.

This is why to buy iPhones in person with people that you know :know alot about iPhone to look at it
