Facebook Chat

This is one annoying thing that I can't find a way around. Okay so say if you're running your Facebook app on your phone and you exit it, so its still running in the background. For everyone else it says I'm still online on facebook chat so they willingly try and chat with me only to find out that i don't respond because its in my pocket. I know it does a single vibration to notify me that someone has started a chat, but is there any way to disable chat without exiting the app entirely ? Has anyone else had this problem?
