Why won't my iPhone 4 allow me to update?

my iphone 4 wont allow me to update. it keeps saying

I have an update and all my apps wont work on my phone. I click to update and it says there isn't any updates

The iPhone 4 is no longer eligible for iOS updates. They opened up the iPhone 4s to upgrade to iOS 8 and it renders the phone useless. The processor can't handle it.
