Why does my iCloud email on my iPhone say I have 5 unread messages, but I can't find them?

My iCloud email on my iPhone says I have 5 unread messages, but I can't find them.

It started with one unread message and now says I have five. I have opened all the folders on both the phone and my mac and can't find them. I have set the automatic erase to 24 hours to see if that would delete them, but nothing does. How can I find and delete these phantom messages?

Mark all as unread and then mark all as read.
