When people mention "ecosystem", what are they referring to?

I keep hearing the ecosystem in different forums.

Can anyone tell me, in a nutshell, what they are referring to?

Thanks.

It refers to the various products (iPhone, iPod, iPad, Macs) and the app store(s) and the way everything works together.

For example if you are heavily involved in the Apple ecosystem you would have an iPhone, iPad, MacBook, possibly an Apple TV.

I have a MacBook Air, iPhone, iPad, and iPod. I use iCloud, and iTunes to sync all the data between them.

Ecosystem expands well beyond the first party devices themselves. It includes all of the available 3rd party products that can be used with your devices, like applications, accessories, etc.

I'd say I fall into that category.

iMac, rMBP, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, and a couple of Time Capsules. I'm looking for a good Mac Mini to use as a server for media as well. Waiting to see what next week will bring.

I do have a Windows virtual machine which is for 1 task, filling in my timesheet for work as the software only works with IE 9

My usage covers both work and play which means I have to use Excel and Word on the Mac.

My personal ecosystem at home is all Apple. RMBP, iPhone, iPad, Mac mini and 2 apple yes. But my household isn't because my husband is a hold-out with a Windows machine for gaming. I do use a Windows PC at work though.

iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, Apple Wallpapers, and iTunes email receipts for purchases. What?

Sent from my ancient but trustworthy iPhone 5

iPhone 6, iPod Touch, iPad Air, iPad Mini, iPad (don't use it anymore), MacBook Pro, iMac, Apple TV

Here's where it gets annoying and why "ecosystem" is so important. My work ecosystem doesn't exist. I have a BlackBerry Bold 9930 phone (which is great contrary as a phone for email, etc.) Then an iPad Air for Field Based Operations. Then an HP 2700 series laptop for home use. Sure the email syncs through Outlook, but what a mess.

Just give me an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook and call it a day.
