i am trying to tweak my Notifications to my liking and it appears i may not need the badge app icons since they can now be turned off..

the Notification Center looks like it handles my messages nicely

what about anyone else?

They might be nice to have just to see it real quick. That way you don't necessarily have pull down the notification center to check if you have messages after being away from your phone for a while or playing a game for a while and forgetting they were there.

I use them for words with friends and emails only, and it's working great!

It's still nice to have them. For example, there are apps that show the week number in the app badge which can be quiete useful.
